Have yo ever wondered why exotic birds have colorful feathers, I saw on National georaphic last night, and it seems they attract the females. And the females can identify the makes charecteristics by them(?) A peahen, for example, lays more eggs for a male having a more symmetrical tail design. some birds develop a color on their feathers that demonstrates their eating habits, a kind of red tinge on their feathers (a rash!). Female spiders are attracted to the amount of hair on the male's legs (gross).
Man is the most complex animal (or so they say), likeing to the opposite sex (excluding hermaphrodites), can be due to various resons. Like the guy next door mows the lawn nicely, or that gal works in a laundry and takes care of her hair, ... Amazingly there is no straight forward way to lure a companionship, but appearance does matter. Queen latifah may not lure all those kured by Nicole kidman(?).
One has to understand though, that there is nu such thing as universal liking.
